Sally Howard enjoying Zentangle
Sally Howard and her husband, Vince, like working jigsaw puzzles “just to keep the mind working” she said.
When a new art class was introduced, Sally said at first she would pass it by because of her severe arthritic fingers.
“I’m no artist,” she said, “but decided to try it for fun.”
It is Zentangle. Zentangle is easy to learn and do, a fun and lighthearted way to relax. With the Zentangle methodi, anyone can create beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It is easy to learn and easy to do as you follow a specified series of steps. The process can include drawing a series of lines, symbols and shapes that transform into beautiful works of art. The tools are simple: a No. 2 pencil, sharpie pen, and rubbing stubs for shading.
Sally noted her first attempt at a flower design didn’t go as she had expected. “I didn’t do well even though I followed her (Instructors) instructions,” she said. “I made a different kind of flower but I liked it just as well as the others. It’s really pretty easy.”
The Zentangle class is offered once a month but Sally has taken such a liking to it, that she asks for extra copies of the design and works on them on her own.
“If you are going to the class to be a perfectionist, it takes all the fun out of it,” she said, explaining that others in the class keep saying it’s too hard. “It’s pretty amazing at the end of the class to look at each other’s work and how different they each look.”
Sally offers this advice to others who might take up the craft: “You just have to listen when she (instructor) talks. If I can’t finish a step before she goes to the next one, I get frustrated with myself. It’s not the instructor’s fault.”
