Thursday, June 12th 2014 is Heat Awareness Day in Wisconsin. As temperatures increase now that it’s officially summer, everyone wants to enjoy outdoor activities but sometimes that combination can be dangerous.
According to the National Weather Service, heat is the number one weather related killer in the United States.
State emergency leaders are reminding everyone of the dangers of extreme heat. They say seniors and children have a higher risk of heat related illness.
Here are some tips on staying cool for the summer.
- Keep your living space cool
- Slow down and limit physical activity
- Drink plenty of water and eat lightly
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light colored clothing
- Don’t stop taking medications unless your doctor says you should
