Mary Anne Summerson
Mary Anne Summerson said she was working in the Penney store in Bucyrus when a young man kept pursuing her.
“That guy thought I was his girlfriend,” she said. “The war was just beginning so to get rid of him, I told him I was going to join the Navy.”
And she did much to the joy of her father who had previously served in the military. She said her mother took her to Cleveland to enlist and complete all the necessary paper work. She served 5 years performing secretarial work at the Naval Base in Arlington, Va.
“My dad was very happy with my decision,” she said. “It gave me a lot pride and experience you would never get in Marion or Bucyrus. I carry that pride here with me today. I never regretted it one bit.”
Mary Anne said she looks forward to the annual Veterans Day program at Marion Primrose. “I never dreamed my trip to Cleveland would come to mean so much later in life,” she said.
Mary Anne and her late husband, Frank, moved to Primrose almost 5 years ago — another decision she has never regretted. She has a son, Joe Bauer.
