I was a young teacher in Ten Sleep, Wyoming, and was excited because that handsome Air Force soldier named Floyd had moved to Ten Sleep and was taking me to a dance. My family lived on an island made by the Ten Sleep Creek and there were gates and bridges to cross.
After Floyd arrived and took me out to the car, I discovered that one of my high school students was seated in the back seat.
What was Floyd thinking taking him with us, I thought?
When we got back to town he dropped off the student. He had just gone along to open the gates so Floyd wouldn’t get his shoes muddy.
Everyone was involved in our romance.
Later on when we were looking at engagement rings, another of my students watched us picking the ring and he hurried back to Ten Sleep to spread the news to the whole town.
