Their motto is “it takes a community to make a community,” and their sewing projects have benefitted the local hospital and helped wounded soldiers on the war-torn battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan.

They’re the ladies of the Sewing Club at the Zanesville Primrose Retirement Community, and their sense of community keeps them focused on helping people locally and afar.

These retired women have always had an interest in sewing. They gather in the Primrose café a couple of times a month and also in their apartments to work on “sewing projects,” with donated fabric from Bryan’s Interiors — they always have a huge supply of donated fabric remnants on hand.

One of their most distinctive projects began when they found out what typically happened to injured soldiers on the battlefield: the wounded soldiers didn’t have any clothing to put on before being taken to the hospital — most of the time they were covered up only by a piece of paper. This was a real eye-opener for the sewing club.

The result: “Wounded Soldier Bags,” which were drawstring bags that had pockets on the inside. The bags were fairly large and were supplied with items that the troops needed — like t-shirts, underwear, socks, toiletries, slippers, and sweat pants — which were donated by the local Lions Club and Girl Scouts.

With donations of fleece fabric, the Sewing Club made blankets to send to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. They did purchase some fleece so they could make at least 40 blankets. They enjoyed this project and felt rewarded every time they received a letter from a soldier thanking them for the “little piece of home.”

The latest sewing project involves making various size teddy bears for the Pediatric unit at Genesis Hospital, along with other child-connected services.

The Sewing Club looks forward to its next sewing projects, and its resident members enjoy that they are contributing to local and distant communities.
