Resident Janice Arcuri celebrates 99th birthday

Zanesville, OH, Retirement Communities

Zanesville Primrose resident Janice Arcuri turned 99 years old on October 8, 2015 — a milestone birthday by anyone’s standards. Born in Crooksville, OH, on October 8, 1916 – Arcuri worked for the Maysville School District as the elementary school Librarian. In 1934, at the age of 19, she was wed to Joe Allen. They were married in the home of their minister and kept the wedding very small due to the effects of the great depression. Despite the economic difficulties of the time, Janice remembers that she was still able to wear a beautiful white wedding dress on her special day. Sadly, Joe passed away in 1959 after 24 years of marriage but was survived by four children – Judy, John, Jo Ann and Jim.

In 1962, Janice married Sam Arcuri in Hagerstown, Maryland. Sam was from Roseville, OH, and had a reputation for being quite the ladies’ man. In fact, his friends teased that if he ever actually got engaged to Janice, they would show up with a mule and ride him from Roseville to Crooksville. It was for this reason that Sam and Janice decided to get married in Maryland!

All marriages are memorable, but the circumstances surrounding this day were quite unique. Not only were Sam and Janice married that day, but Janice’s son, John and his wife, Darlene were as well. It was a double wedding ceremony! In fact, Darlene and Janice traveled together to apply for marriage licenses. When the wedding was over, Darlene and John went home to Crooksville and Sam and Janice drove to Florida for their honeymoon. They were married for 47 beautiful years before Sam passed away in 2009.

Some of Janice’s earliest childhood memories involve eating ice cream at age 2 ½ and going to visit her grandmother in the hospital when she was just 2 years old. In 1957, she finished 2nd in the district Mrs. America Contest after being voted Miss Crooksville the same year. Memories of her children involve watching her daughter, Judy as a majorette in the Crooksville High School Band. Daughter JoAnn played trombone in the band and son John played football for the high school team. Now, in addition to her four children, she has 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren to keep her busy.

Janice made the move to Primrose in 2011 and enjoys living there. “Nothing replaces home, but Primrose is a wonderful place to live,” Janice said. “I am more than satisfied, and I don’t think there is a better place to be anywhere,” she added.

Janice’s spirit is a real joy, and she is always among the first to greet new residents. In fact, her apartment is so beautiful that we show it to people who stop by for tours of our community. Janice’s motto is “keep moving” and we are so proud to have her among the amazing folks who live at Primrose here in Zanesville. Thank you for bringing such joy to our lives, Janice!
