Primrose residents craft teddy bears and give them to Police Departments, and other institutions, who then give to children when needed

Zanesville, OH, Retirement Communities

Several years ago, Primrose Retirement Community of Zanesville came up with the idea of making teddy bears to give away. We found patterns for three different sizes, and all of the fabric was donated by Carol Bryan at Bryan’s Interiors in Zanesville. We also had donations of stuffing, and we met weekly to cut out the bears, stuff them and then sew them shut. We also sewed cloth address labels to the leg of each of them so people would know they were “made with love” by our Primrose residents. That project lasted about 1 ½ years.

Over that span of time, we made approximately 350 bears. We gave them to the local pediatric unit at Bethesda Hospital, the local Transition’s Women’s Shelter, Eastside Community Ministry, Zanesville Police Department, the Sheriff’s Department, and to Operation Spirit who sends items to our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. Our bears ended up traveling all over the world!

About 6 months ago we wanted to do a project that would give back to our community, so we decided to make the bears once again. We meet twice monthly to prepare the bears, still using donated fabric and donated stuffing. We have a lot of new residents helping us now who did not get to help with the “bear project” the first time, averaging about 10 each time we make our bears. Everyone really enjoys making them and especially giving them away. We recently presented the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Department with 50 bears and also presented 50 bears to the Zanesville Police Department. They were thrilled and stated, “We love to carry them in our cruisers so they can give them to children when needed.”

We plan to continue working on this project. We do not have a specific goal in mind as to how many we will make. The Residents enjoy the fellowship and working with each other.
