Sweetwater Retirement celebrated Chinese New Year on Thursday, February 19.

We were excited to honor Ying Julian who comes to Sweetwater by way of her homeland in China.

Ying has worked as a server at Sweetwater for over 2 years and is loved by all, especially our residents.

Chinese New Year is a very important holiday in China and consists of several traditions, the first being; a Dragon Dance complete with Chinese music, our dragon was created in house by Life Enrichment Coordinator, Betty Jean Long.

In addition to the Dragon Dance at lunch time, residents were given some historical information about the Chinese New Year holiday and were encouraged to wear the color red. The significance of wearing red is to bring good luck in the New Year.

Additionally, residents were able to look at the Chinese Zodiac and see the animal for the year they were born. Rounding out the celebration was the distribution of red envelopes containing money and a bit of wisdom, similar to a fortune in a fortune cookie. It is customary to give money where even numbers are considered to be lucky.

Happy Chinese New Year to all, and may it be lucky for everyone!
