On Thursday, June 12, 2014 in keeping with tradition at Primrose KC, the residents and staff kicked off the annual Summer Bash. While the day began with cloudy and rain-heavy skies, the sun broke through in the early afternoon and began shining, bringing with it temperatures in the low 80s. It was the perfect day for a Hawaiian luau, Primrose-style! Spreading over the front lawn and through the parking lot, the tropical decorations set the stage for what was the best Summer Bash ever. Guests began arriving a bit before 5:00 PM and stayed until after 7:00 PM.
Executive Chef Phillip Martin outdid himself this year. First thing in the morning, two whole hogs were placed on the grill for roasting, later to be served with a choice of two sauces drizzled over it. The buffet line also featured a braised asparagus and tomatoes, corn and cheesy potato side, and fresh fruit displayed in shark-carved watermelons. Dessert was the sweet favorite pineapple upside-down cake topped with fresh whipped cream.
A party simply isn’t a party without entertainment, and what a show there was! The Overtones of Kansas City, known for their vast repertoire of big band dance music ranging from Glenn Miller to contemporary tunes, kept toes tapping and a song of the lips of each guest from the beginning of the luau to the end. Playing such favorites as “Over the Rainbow”, “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”, and “Kansas City”, the band enchanted party-goers. While the band was taking a short break, the Aloha Punehana Polynesian Dancers (which means, “we come to you with much warmth and affection”) performed several traditional island dances much to the audience’s delight.
The youngest of guests enjoyed a variety of fun activities such as the bean bag toss and washers games, a bounce house moonwalk with a double slide for racing, and henna tattoos provided Primrose server Molly. Decked out in a plethora of colorful leis, the children were a flurry of energy and fun as they raced about from activity to activity throughout the evening.
With nearly 300 guests present, the Summer Bash was a success. Longtime resident Harriett Watson said, “I don’t know how you do it, but even the weather was cooperative! Thanks for another wonderful Summer Bash!” It’s one of the highlights of the season in Kansas City, and this luau will be talked about for a long time to come! Aloha!
