I have been asked to tell a little about the years of friendship between Irma Lou Field and myself (Betty Huffman), residents along with our husbands, of Primrose, Marion. “Irm” and I are both 84, and have been friends for 84 years, so it could be a long story, but I will keep it short. Along with our husbands, Richard Field and Randall Huffman, we eat lunch together most days. Richard and Randall have been friends and working associates for 60 years or so.

Irm says that when she was born, my father brought me down to meet her. I was three months old. Neither she nor I have a distinct memory of this, but we are told that was when our friendship started. Then on the first day of school, Irm’s mother, Mrs. Wall, brought her to the first grade door to meet her teacher. However, I was watching for them and said, “It is OK, Mrs. Wall, I will take care of her.” According to Irm, I did.

These are tales that we both have been told and they are probably true. We were classmates and playmates throughout school. In the summers, I rode my pony a mile or so to her place to play with her and her brother, Bud Wall. In the winter, we skated together along with many other La Ruites when the Scioto River actually froze.

We went off to college, married and raised our families in different sections of the state. Both of our families produced serious swimmers and friendly competitors.

Irm retired, professor emeritus, from Ohio Northern and in retirement, she and her husband moved back to La Rue. I retired from Marion Technical College, from the directorship of the Medical Laboratory Technology program. The two families got together for bridge and other fun times.

The Richard Field family and the Randall Huffman family were neighboring farmers and friends. Dick’s children graduated from Elgin with our children. Later,Irm, as a widow, married Richard Field, a widower and her former high school sweetheart. And so the relationships have continued.

Currently, we all are still neighbors and friends at Primrose.
