On January 21st, 2014, we celebrated the 70th Anniversary of one of our amazing couples that live at Primrose Retirement, Hugh and Charlotte Phipps. They started by renewing their vows in the Primrose Chapel, and afterwards there was an amazing 70th Anniversary party in our Café!

Below is a letter about their life that was written by their daughter Faye and was read by the minister just before they renewed their vows:

“70 years ago, Hugh and Charlotte were married in the home of her parents in Charleston, IL, attended by Charlotte’s sister and Hugh’s brother. Rev. Paul Curry officiated. Hugh was on leave from the Navy.

They spent their first night as man and wife in Mattoon, then the next day, they went to St. Louis for a two-day honeymoon. They returned to Charleston and packed for a train trip to Corpus Christie, Texas, where Hugh was stationed. Another brother of Hugh’s gave them a night’s stay at a motel there as a gift, and then found a small garage apartment to rent as their first home.

Post-Navy, Hugh (EIU graduate) taught school in various places, including Charleston, Manteno, and Skokie, Illinois. In 1951, he finished his Masters Degree at ISU in Bloomington-Normal.

In 1956, Hugh opened a men’s clothing store in Decatur called Phipps Casuals in the Blue Mill Building. In May of 1959, their baby girl Faye Ann was born, named after her maternal grandmother.

Hugh then began teaching in the English Dept. at MacArthur High School and stayed there for 25 years. He also enjoyed coaching their golf team, including their only female, Penny Hammel, who went on to become an LGPA touring professional. In the summers, Hugh also worked in the Pro Shop at the Country Club of Decatur.”

Congratulations, Coach and Mrs. Phipps, on your 70th wedding anniversary. A wonderful and a joyous achievement. Coach, I was one of the many low-talent athletes you endured at Manteno, and I hope you remember me. Let me say, Coach, all my memories of you are fond ones, and I still think of you quite often. Your kindness to me a coach, and your patience teaching a resistant student the ins and outs of grammar and sentence structure have helped me a great deal over the course of my life, and are still deeply appreciated. It was wonderful to see your picture, which convinced me you are still laid-back and exuding a calm and settling influence. Congratulations, again.!!
