14 Tips for 2014

By | December 31, 2013

Most people don’t know that New Year’s celebrations have their roots in ancient Babylon. Over 4,000 years ago, the ancient Babylonians would recognize the coming of the new year with eleven days of celebrations. The tradition of making “New Year’s Resolutions” came out of these celebrations. While the Babylonians’ resolutions usually involved paying off any debts and returning any borrowed tools or equipment, today’s New Year’s resolutions can include almost anything.

So, what are your resolutions for next year? Are you going to lose weight and get back in shape, take up a new hobby or revive a lost talent, or will you kick a bad habit and replace it with something positive? If you are still struggling to figure out what you will resolve in 2014, check out our 14 Tips for 2014 below for a few ideas.

1) Laugh!
It’ll do you good!

2) Be positive
Thinking positive can decrease stress, boost resistance to colds, and add years to your life! What’s not to like?

3) Read More
Reading daily can help prevent Alzheimer’s, improve memory, and relieve stress and anxiety. So, turn off the TV, and pick up a book!

4) Spend Time with Family
Take the time to enjoy your family! Show them how much they mean to you.

5) Play with your Pet
Pets have been shown to help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels! Get out there and take Fido for a few more walks in 2014.

6) Unplug!
Technology is great, but studies have shown that it is not healthy for us to be constantly online. Unplug every now and then.

7) Sing
Maybe you’re no Elvis, but nothing feels quite like belting out your favorite tune while driving your car, cleaning your home, or the age-old favorite of singing in the shower. So let it out! You’re probably a better singer than you think!

8) Do Something a little Crazy
You only live once! Take time this year to do those things that you’ve always wanted to do. Sell your house and move! Go zip lining! Do something just a little crazy!

9) Make a new Friend
You can never have too many! Get out of your comfort zone and meet someone new.

10) Say “Thank You!”
Whether it’s to a veteran or a stranger, say “Thank You!”

11) Volunteer
Give back!

12) Go Outside
There’s a whole world around you. Get out there and enjoy it! You may see something you’ve never seen before!

13) Learn Something New
You’re never too old to learn something new! Whether it’s learning about wine or creating a work of art, take the time to learn this year.

14) Have a Little Fun!
Go ahead. You deserve it! Don’t be so serious all the time. Let yourself go! Have some fun!
