Dorothy McCloud has seen many changes in her lifetime. She has seen the invention of airplanes, microwaves, electricity, mass manufacture of automobiles, man in space and even man walking on the moon, television, computers, iPads and more.

Dorothy recently celebrated her 102nd birthday with a big cake, shared with residents for the noontime lunch, and flowers from Primrose. She was also the recipient of a shower of cards and well wishes. She attributes her longevity to good genes as her mother lived to be 104 years and nine months. She is the third of eight children — four of whom are still living. “I just have good genes. Most of my family has lived a long life.”

Dorothy said she feels right at home in her new apartment at Primrose. A resident for just more than a year, she said both she and her family felt she needed to move into a place where she could have assistance — if — and when needed. She is currently independent.

“I looked around and thought I would like it here,” she said. “I felt like family right away. Everyone (staff and residents) were so helpful and so kind. I feel like it’s home. It’s amazing how it all came together. I love my apartment and the layout is great. I have a wonderful view and can see people coming and going.”

Dorothy named several activities she enjoy including the variety of entertainment and the spiritual opportunities each week. “I love the church services provided,” she said. “There is so much for people to do here—the trips and lunches out. If I were younger, I would be going but I know my limits and you just have to do what is best for you.”

Dorothy worked as a secretary for the government during World War II in Chicago. Following the war, she worked as secretary 30 years for a private industry, also in Chicago. She retired to Marion where family was closer.
