Primrose resident Leo Reding
Leo Reding was born in 1924 in Rose Creek, MN, where he grew up. His family farmed for a living, which gave Leo an appreciation for gardening and environmental issues which carries forward to this day. Leo attended the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, where he starred on both the football and track teams. He has many fond memories from his time at UST where made some lifelong friendships!
In 1949 he married Marian Thommes. He and Marian were married for just under 63 years and it is safe to say she was truly the love of his life. He and Marian have five children — Colleen, Maureen, Terry, Laurie and Tom — along with five grandchildren.
Family has always been the most important thing in Leo’s life and he passed that value onto to his children.
Leo taught and coached at Pacelli high school for two years before taking a job with the Hormel company. He was very active politically from the time he was in college and in 1968 was elected to the Austin City council. From there he became Mayor and then in 1974 was elected to the State Legislature and served for 18 years as the State Representative for this area.
Leo very much enjoyed serving the people of Austin in public service, and he and Marian both appreciated the opportunities it gave them to meet many people from all walks of life.
In retirement he and Marian would spend winters in Florida and in the summers, Leo gardened on the farm he owns south of town in addition to the many environmental projects he did on the farm such as planting prairie grass, putting in a pond and planting many trees. At the height of his gardening days, his children often wondered if he had planted a garden to feed the entire city of Austin!
Leo enjoys living at Primrose and very much appreciates the attentive and caring staff
