Lew & Sunny Welch married 63 years
With February winding down I couldn’t help but reflect on the special couples we have living here at Primrose Retirement Community in Grand Island, Nebraska. At our fun Valentine’s party we added up the years of marriage represented by the couples that call Primrose “home” and who were attending the party. It added up to just shy of 400 years. Wow! 400 years! In this day and age that we live, when over half of the marriages end in divorce, I thought it was appropriate to ask some of these couples for words of wisdom or their secrets for their marriages surviving six to seven decades.
I visited with couples who have been married more than sixty years — one couple had just celebrated their 72nd anniversary! — and this is what I learned: “Take one day at a time”; “We made a vow – a promise those many years ago and promises are NOT to be broken”; “Don’t be selfish”; “Getting a divorce is just too easy for many”; “Three important words for a marriage to succeed-LOVE, PATIENCE, and RESPECT”, “When you’re in love you learn to give and take”; “Never go to bed angry”; “Look for the positive and don’t dwell on the negative”, “Have a sense of humor”; “Appreciate what you have”; “Marriage is a commitment and that needs to be remembered”; “Marriage is a joint effort”; “Kiss her in the morning and kiss her again in the evening”; and “It’s the little things that count”.
Yes, I’d say these special couples have lots of good advice. Now if others would just apply these words of wisdom to their marriage. Maybe then, and only then, we’ll have more 60-70+ year-long marriages to celebrate in the future. Congratulations to these special couples!
