When I arrived in Sparta, IL for my first year of teaching in 1947, my transportation was a bicycle. The high school was a mile from our humble abode which was just right for my legs after hiking all over Europe in World War II. If my bicycle could stand it, then I could.
The year with its school calendar of rain, wind, snow and determined bicycle rider welcomed the last day of school and the final bike ride! To my surprise, and shock, the bike was nowhere to be found when it was time to go home! Suddenly, I looked up and at the tree where I had parked it there was the bike swaying in the tree. There was no way to retrieve the bike, but the students took pity on me. They climbed the tree and using the rope enjoyed the laugh of all.
The next year, I showed up with a Chevrolet station wagon which was only nine years old, but impossible to hide at the top of a tree!
