With 11-11-11 coming once in a century, it was indeed a time to celebrate Veterans Day in a special way. We, here at Primrose, have good reason to observe the day. We have fifteen residents, former residents and staff to honor for their service to our country.
At 9 am on November 11, we gathered for a program planned and directed by our Life Enrichment Coordinator, Barbara Della Rossa, who was a Master Sergeant in the U. S, Army. She was assisted by our Director of Nursing, Chris Belsky, who was Petty Officer Third Class in the U. S. Navy.
The flag was posted by the Pueblo Veterans Ritual Team from Veterans Serving Veterans volunteers. Then Madeline Cordova sang “The Star Spangled Banner.” Our Director, Tammy Minuhin, welcomed our residents and guests.
Certificates of Appreciation were presented to each veteran by Chris Belsky. Those receiving certificates were: U. S. Army: Bill Turman; U. S. Air Force: Charles Rowe; U. S. Coast Guard: Ruby Lawler; U. S. Navy & Army: John Boykin; U. S. Navy: Bob Davitt; Joe Gernazio; Bernard Karpinski; Alexander Labas; Mary Ann Nardini; Robert Utterback; Wayne Watts.
Belsky reminded those present that the occasion is also sad. It is a remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives for our country. We must not forget that our freedom comes at a price.
The highlight of the program was unveiling a wall of photos in our Fireside Lounge. This wall has a picture of each veteran with room for more veterans who make Primrose their home. In fact, two more veterans moved in later in November.
Madeline Cordova closed the program with a song she wrote for 9/11, “I Am An American.” Afterwards we enjoyed visiting with our guests and refreshments.
