The Wasilla Primrose had a busy December!

Friday, December 10th we had our beautiful 2nd Annual Christmas Gala to benefit the Santa Cop Program. Mat Su Santa Cop is a program that was started by Investigator Donna Anthony of Palmer to provide resources to seniors of the Mat Su valley who may otherwise be alone or unable to celebrate the Christmas holiday. Their mission is to provide gifts, food, and Christmas-day companionship to local Valley seniors who do not have family or who do not have resources to make this day a reason to celebrate and otherwise may be alone.

We had many members of the community come to celebrate with us, including several officers from both the Wasilla and Palmer Police Departments. Chef Matt and the local Job Corps students created an amazing spread of food including cheesecakes! The local band Element 47 provided the music that everyone danced to, and even Santa took time out of his busy pre-holiday schedule to come by and say hi. Above and beyond all the fun we had, Wasilla Primrose also saw a huge outpouring of donations from the community to donate to the Santa Cop Program — gifts and donations that are desperately needed this year. It is amazing and heartwarming to see our wonderful community pull together and support a fantastic organization.

Monday December 13, 2010 brought the amazing Cantora Arctica Choir to our home. Cantora Arctica was founded in February of 2001 by conductor Janet Stotts. The group of mostly Mat-Su Valley women are of all ages and backgrounds, joining energies once a week to sing! The group performs two full-length concerts every year — one at Christmas and one in the spring — and is frequently heard at various civic and community functions.

Cantora Arctica has performed concert tours throughout the State of Alaska, as well as in Europe. In the summer of 2004, the group performed in Germany, Austria, France, Luxembourg and England. Cantora Arctica plans to travel to Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic in November of 2009 on an Advent Tour.

For the third time this year, they came to sing just for Wasilla Primrose! This time around the song selection was primarily Christmas themed, but we did get some breathtaking opera pieces, a great solo by one of the members, and a few rounds of old favorites such as “We Three Kings”, “O Holy Night” and “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”. The entire crowd here at Wasilla Primrose sang along with all our hearts. The hour-long concert ended much too soon, but was so enjoyed by all. As everyone began to head back home, more than one voice could be heard humming the melody to one of the beautiful songs we had heard this evening.
