Mother's Day Tea at Aberdeen Primrose

Mother's Day Tea at Primrose

Aberdeen, SD, Senior Living
On Friday May 6, 2011, the Primrose residents at Aberdeen’s Independent Living apartments gathered for a Mother’s Day Tea. Many of the residents’ daughters attended the celebration.

We had a chocolate fountain with an assortment of fruit and cake for dipping. Many of us had never seen a chocolate fountain before and had a lot of fun assembling and dipping the tasty treats!

There was much laughter and excitement as we gathered and visited. All of the mothers received a flower as a small token of all they have done. Happy Mother’s Day and thank you for a lovely afternoon!

Master Gardener Connie Smith shares her gardening secrets

Gardening Show at Zanesville Primrose

Finalist Container Winners (l to r): Niki Friend, herb/vegetable container; Master Gardener, Connie Smith; Judy Reinshield, flowering container; and Beverly Morningstar, succulent container.

Zanesville, OH, Senior Living
On Tuesday, May 14th, OSU Master Gardner, Connie Smith presented “The Secrets to Successful Container Gardens” at the Zanesville, OH, Primrose. The event was offered free to the community and we kicked-off with a delicious lunch to a full house in attendance!

Connie began the presentation by sharing her plans to create three different containers during her demonstration: an herb/ vegetable combo container, a flowering container and a succulent container (what’s a succulent? you ask. Think of hen & chick plants: those plants that have thick, fleshy, water-storing leaves or stems).

She explained container gardens are actually a very popular choice right now due to many people being limited in their space for putting in a traditional ground garden or flower beds, plus a pinched economy is playing its part, too. But here was the great news for those in attendance: at the end of the demonstration, all three containers would be given away to participants in the audience, courtesy of Primrose which purchased all plants and containers for this event.

As Connie designed each container, she shared with us secret tips to designing great containers and keeping them looking terrific all season long. Tip #1: When placing potting soil in the container add water and mix well before placing the plants in the container. Tip #2: Pick plants that are light- or shade-compatible. A plant that loves sun placed with shade-loving plants will soon fade if the container is placed on a shady porch.

And Tip #3 (her best tip, which also shocked many experienced gardeners): You can put more plants in that container than you think — it’s okay if it looks crowded because the plants will adjust and your container will look full and lush!

April Activities at Council Bluffs Primrose

Easter egg hunting at Primrose

Ardy Cozad hunting for Easter eggs.

Council Bluffs Senior Living
Flowers, trees and blossoms are popping up everywhere in Council Bluffs. The birds are singing, baseball games are all over the town and the tenants who had cabin fever are rejoicing.

The Primrose Easter Bunny left Easter eggs filled with goodies outside of everyone’s door on Easter Sunday.

The Walking Club is looking forward to OUTSIDE walks, where the wildlife can be seen and enjoyed all around the property.

Our new Music Makers have been singing and playing instruments in our assisted living lounge and enjoying each others’ talents.

Our pen pals from the Franklin Elementary first grade will be here this month to join us in Bingo!

The Garden Club will be busy planting flowers all around the gazebo for everyone to enjoy while drinking their morning coffee!

One of our April highlights — the first ever Progressive Supper Club — was a great success! On a Saturday evening, we gathered at the first apartment to enjoy a glass of wine. Then, we joined at the second apartment for some appetizers which included liver paté. For the main course, we went to the Garden Café for Chicken Casserole and fresh-baked rolls. To end the evening, we then strolled up to the final apartment for dessert: chocolate mousse topped with whipped cream. All food was prepared and cooked by our wonderful chef, Barb! Many thanks go out to our apartment hosts and hostesses: Mr. & Mrs. Rodney and Martha Davis, Doris Samuelson and Mary Clements. We will have another progressive supper in June.

With May here, we look forward to a Mother’s Day Tea, Gardening, and a new book for the book club to read and some new entertainment.
