Hollywood party Rachel, Aggie and Anna Marie

Mankato, MN, Senior Living Community
We like to think that we treat our residents like royalty every day, but on one particular Friday we literally rolled out the red carpet for them!

We threw a big bash here the week of the Academy Awards. We had a red carpet for the residents to walk, with an area for a paparazzi photo shoot, and they each received their very own gold star with their name on it, just like the real Hollywood Blvd. We had “Chocolate Billionaires” for dessert and fancy drinks.

We listened to famous theme songs from movies of the past and tested our Hollywood knowledge with a trivia game. It was a great party!

Mankato Senior Living Community in Minnesota
Puppy Love Therapy Dogs, Inc., came to visit Primrose of Mankato last month and boy was it a special treat!

Unlike service dogs, or seeing eye dogs, the Puppy Love Therapy dogs provide emotional support, humor, and entertainment to the elderly.

They came to visit Primrose on a Saturday morning, with 5 dogs and all kinds of props to entertain us! The dogs did tricks, pranced to the music, and spent about a half hour just letting the residents pet and play with them! It was a great addition to our line-up of activities here and we already have people asking “when is Puppy Love coming again?”.

What do you get when you hold an ugly tie day one week and PJ Day the following week? That’s easy: Ugly ties and PJs.

It started with our Executive Director, Kathy Walker, who set the bar high with her pink and black Dr. Seuss tie and hat outfit. Boy was it ugly and bright, and she created quite the scene as she strolled through the halls of Primrose as if she was the “cat in the hat” herself!

But it didn’t take long for the ugliest tie of the day to appear which was worn by resident Bob Shaeffer. Talk about creative. He took an old pink tie, a black magic marker and drew an arrow pointing up to his face as he titled himself “UGLY.” Next, he put on a set of grossly deformed teeth, then placed a hat on his head and the finishing touch was the CD he tied to his tie with a star on it. We loved the look and titled him the winner of the day.

The following week, we held PJ Day and again our Executive Director showed her childlike side when she showed up for work in her PJs titled, “Cry Baby.” She was outlandish, and had all of us busting a side laughing at her. And then the residents started to appear in their PJs. Resident Mary DeCoste appeared, showing off her fancy flannel nightwear (and take note of the leopard skin slippers with the pink fur fringe) — she was styling!

And they kept coming: out strolled resident Doris Rarick showing off her monkey PJs. Then our newest residents — husband and wife, Mike and Vonnie Noll — made their appearance. Vonnie sported the latest in dog-lover apparel with treaty bones for any four legged friends she might encounter, and husband Mike surprised us all when he showed his tee-shirt and PJ bottoms with super heroes. Who knew our sweet and quiet resident Mike still loves his super heroes from his childhood days! Well, I guess we all do now, but as his t-shirt says: “he doesn’t care!”

Who could have guessed that Sally Smelzer would appear in her Holstein cow bathrobe, and Bob Schaeffer in his Paul Revere “light-the-night-by-Primrose-candle-stick-holder”? He actually took a plastic flower pot with Primrose on it turned it upside down and glued a battery lit candle to it.

The creativity kept on coming: not to be outdone, Stephen Tharp made his appearance in his Scooby Doo’s (the “Rexy Beast”). Never in a million years could we have guessed that Stephen loved Scooby Doo!

Just goes to show, when we invite our residents to show us the real side of themselves in PJs we need to be ready anything!

New Family Joins Lancaster Primrose

warm welcome

Clockwise from left: Nancy Messbarger, Mike and Vonnie Noll, Kathy Walker, and Barry the Basset Hound

Lancaster, Ohio Senior Living
It’s April, it’s spring and we at Lancaster Primrose are happy as can be to have a new addition to our Primrose family. Executive Director Kathy Walker and Marketing Director Nancy Messbarger greeted Mike and Vonnie Noll — and Barry the Basset Hound — with a Primrose Welcome Bag of goodies. Although a bit tired from moving all day, both Mike and Vonnie were bubbling with excitement about their new home. Barry the pup chose the big pond in the back yard as his favorite spot within seconds of arriving. So, this seemed a great choice for the first family photo.

Mike and Vonnie already have exciting plans about their residing at Primrose, even though the moving van is still in the driveway. Mike shared his vision of his ten foot model battleship in the pond, with its firing cannons and fireworks for the 4th of July and Veterans Day. Vonnie, who is a Master Gardener, was telling us all her plans for flowers in the front beds and a container garden on her back patio!

They shared with us that they looked at many places before choosing Primrose as their home, but the one factor that Mike said made the biggest difference for them was how we made them feel welcomed from the beginning, and how beautiful Primrose is with all its amenities. It just seemed the perfect fit for their life style. And the perfect place to call home!

Barry the basset hound wants all to know, if you are out near their villa stop by and introduce yourself. He loves making friends and is always up for a good rub!

Spring Music coming from Primrose

art show at Primrose

Resident Jean M. displays her needle point work at Cookies-n-Collections

Council Bluffs Retirement Living
Can you hear the beautiful, joyful, happy singing voices coming from Primrose Retirement Community in Council Bluffs, Iowa? Listen closely and you can hear some favorite classics like ‘Bye, Bye Blackbird,’ ‘In My Merry Oldsmobile,’ ‘Ain’t She Sweet,’ and ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Game’!

Primrose has already attracted more than thirty tenants to our twice monthly SING A LONG. With the accompaniment of Mary Lou, a talented tenant, these singing sessions are a fabulous hit! We have more than twenty songs in our repertoire and we will soon be adding more.

Another new activity here is COOKIES AND COLLECTIONS. In March, tenant Jean M. showcased her unbelievable collection of her very own needlepoint work. What a sight to see! This art work was so delicately intertwined which took her hours upon hours for each piece. The tenants were excited to see the collection and were also treated to cookies.

Primrose of Council Bluffs also hosted The Lewis Central Eighth Grade TAG, (Talented and Gifted) group to present their World War II presentations. These were done on Power Point and presented in our theatre.

The group talked about rationing, weapons, diseases, the romance of Adolf Hitler with Eva Braun and a sample of popular music from the time period along with singing. Primrose and the students were featured two days later in the local Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil newspaper.

Spring has sprung and with the new life of grass, flowers and the buds on the trees, so we breathe new life into our activities. Coming in May we look forward to a Mother’s Day Tea, new entertainment, and a Primrose Progressive Supper Club. Our walking club and gardening club are anxious to get outside to enjoy the many amenities of Spring.

We wish everyone here at Primrose and all of you out there reading this blog, a very blessed and rejuvenating season.
