Sunday, February 13th started out as anything but ordinary for one Wasilla Primrose Resident. Margaret Baer was in her apartment, surrounded by family, as she readied herself for her 100th birthday party. Family and friends had flown in from all over the country to attend this once-in-a-lifetime event, and the excitement was buzzing in the floors below as the crowd of well-wishers began to grow.

Born February 15th, 1911 in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, Margaret has lived a long and exciting life. She has done and seen so much: she was around when the first phones came out, she saw the first television, the first motorized car. And yet she still fishes the Little Su River every year for kings.

Her party was a wonderful homage to a wonderful woman; along the entrance of Primrose were several pictures depicting Margaret at different stages of her life. One showed her holding a loaf of bread next to a sack of flour. This was taken in front of the store her family owned while she was growing up. There was another of her all decked out in Green Bay Packers gear. And still another of her and her husband Len on their wedding day.

Party accoutrements included champagne flutes filled with bubbly pink champagne, floating rose centerpieces at every table, a variety of food and party goers all flowing around the Primrose main floor. Everyone wanted to be near Margaret, to share stories and laughter.

As the party began to wind down, Margaret continued to celebrate as her son-in-law, Jim Podvin, swept her off her feet with a dance.  She then enjoyed a piece of gorgeous strawberry cake while she watched her guests and the Primrose residents dance.  Nearly 100 people celebrated with Margaret, and you could see how much of an impact this elegant lady has made on everyone who has met her.  Primrose is very grateful to have this special woman among our residents, and was honored to be a part of this grand celebration.

Happy Valentine’s Day from the staff and residents in Council Bluffs, Iowa! Spring is right around the corner because the sun is staying out a little later each day and the birds have begun to sing while the snow is melting!

On February 11th, a volunteer group from the local community college, Iowa Western, threw Primrose a Valentine’s Day Dance. A number of male volunteers danced the afternoon away with the ladies. Many said it reminded them of “the good old days,” when they would dance all night with their sweethearts. The volunteers also provided treats and festive music.

Also happening in February is our annual Mardi Gras party. This year Mardi Gras actually falls in March but we’ve decided to start the celebration a little early, on February 24th. Our Primrose chefs are going to make a batch of jambalaya along with red rice and beans. They will also bake the traditional “king cake.” To those who are not familiar with this type of cake, it is sort of like a like a cinnamon roll, rolled out and formed into a circle. A small plastic baby is baked in the dough and whoever is served the piece with the baby is the king or queen of Mardi Gras! Residents will wear masks and beads in typical Mardi Gras fashion and Tim Jarvosky, a local jazz musician favorite, will be the entertainment.

Everyone loves a little pampering. Thanks to Ashley with Mary Kay, some of the ladies at the Aberdeen Primrose Apartments enjoyed the royal spa treatment. Ashley brought in various Mary Kay product samples for the residents to try.

Nothing feels better than “satin hands” in the winter. The women got to use this wonderful product for a little spa treatment on their hands.

The pampering didn’t stop there: the ladies needed that perfect shade of lipstick to complete their look. The ladies spent the afternoon trying on make-up, sharing conversation and many giggles. Coffee and treats were served afterward. Special thanks to Ashley at Mary Kay for sharing with us.

Council Bluffs Senior Living Communities
The tenants of Primrose in Council Bluffs, Iowa are preparing for Valentine’s Day.

With Edible Craft Day, chocolate cupcakes were decorated with pink frosting and candy hearts.

The Red Hats had a special Valentine breakfast and also made valentines with what else? — red and purple feathers!

The entire building is adorned with hearts, cupids and garland.

Iowa Western Community College will sponsor a Valentine Dance on the 11th, and the tenants will have another Valentine party on the 14th with bingo, punch, goodies and a special photo-op with Gary, the giant gorilla!

New to our calendar, we have girls’ night in and guys’ night in. In January, the gals had a wine and jewelry party. This month, the guys night in will be an evening of black jack and pizza!

Other highlights the tenants are looking forward to: Valentine craft day, night club with entertainer Wayne Miller, wine and cheese with Kitchen Emporium and an afternoon with singer Christine Coulsen. Also, spa day with Laura, Life Enrichment Coordinator along with Cindy of Hillcrest. Tenants will relax as soothing music is played with aromatherapy scent in the air. They will receive a hand massage and a light back massage. And as always, they’ll receive a special treat.

Many of the tenants are enjoying new games recently introduced to Primrose. We have memory game tournaments, Saturday bowling, scheduled Kings on the Corner and a giant parachute to not only have fun but to also enhance arm strength. Primrose of Council Bluffs knows how to have fun, because “this is living!”
