The Primrose concept emphasizing comfort, care and security for senior living was developed in the late 1980s when Jim Thares, Primrose founder, observed a need for retirement living apartments in Aberdeen, South Dakota, where he lived. Thares, an accountant and developer, built what would be the first Primrose in Aberdeen, opening its doors in May 1991. The original retirement community was named Westin Courte, but was renamed Primrose. A second Primrose was opened in Bismarck, North Dakota in 1994, and a third facility began providing services to seniors in Rapid City, South Dakota in 1997.

Growth by Primrose has been dynamic through the 10 years following the opening of the community in Rapid City. Soon, Primrose communities were open in Mankato, Minnesota and another facility in Aberdeen –Primrose Place.

The Primrose community plan has evolved through the years. Newer facilities contain movie theatres, fitness centers, ice cream parlors and pubs. Décor is cheerful and comfortable and the community common rooms and apartments are spacious. Townhomes are available at most communities, offering beautiful home-like conditions.

2006 was the year Primrose opened its first facility in Ohio, in Marion. Several other communities are now open in Ohio and Iowa, and locations in Indiana and Illinois will open this year as well. Primrose continues to expand and improve its concept, and facilities are being planned in a number of locations during the next several years.
